The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious football tournaments in the world. It is also the most prestigious club competition in European football. In today’s format, the Champions League begins in late June with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round. Winners of those preliminary rounds will join 26 teams qualified in advance. The 32 teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams and play each other in home and away system. Top two soccer teams in each group will advance to the knockout stages that culminates with the final match in late May or early June.
It is not the case in year 2020 where the traditional schedule for UEFA matches was disrupted due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The format of the quarter-finals onward were amended and are being played as single match knockout ties at neutral venues in Lisbon, Portugal from 12 to 23 August. Bayern Munich is the Champion of this unique 2019/2020 season. They defeat Paris Saint Germain in the final.
By the year of 2020, Spanish clubs have the highest number of victories with 18 wins, followed by England (13 wins) and Italy (12 wins). England has the largest number of winning teams, with five clubs having won the title. The competition has been won by 22 clubs, 12 of which have won it more than once. Real Madrid is the most successful club in the tournament’s history, having won it 13 times, including its first five seasons.
The schedule of 2020/2021 tournament would originally have started in June 2020. But it had been delayed to August due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. All qualifying matches, excluding the play-off round, will be played as single leg matches, hosted by one of the teams decided by draw. The preliminary round which will be played at neutral venue. And it will be played behind closed doors. Final match still follows the same schedule, on 29th May 2021. Just less than two weeks before the beginning of shifted Euro 2020 schedule. It is planned to be held at Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul.
